Before a mortgage

Subscription credit repair or one-time preparation

For a mortgage, a one-time read of your files, with letters you sign and send yourself, usually fits better than a monthly credit repair subscription. A mortgage runs on three dates: the pre-approval, the rate lock and the closing. A subscription runs until you cancel it, and every dispute it files in your name sits on the tri-merge as a remark the underwriter reads.

Reviewed 4 October 2026. QualifyReady is a credit file analysis and document-preparation service, not a credit repair organization.

Why one bills monthly and the other once

The monthly model comes from the statute. The Credit Repair Organizations Act forbids a credit repair organization from charging for a service before the service is fully performed (15 U.S.C. § 1679b(b)). So the industry bills after each round of work, and a round lasts about as long as a bureau's thirty-day window to answer a dispute (§ 1681i(a)(1)). The same Act requires a written contract with the total cost and a three-business-day right to cancel (§§ 1679d and 1679e). That is the law working as intended. It also means the bill keeps coming for as long as there is another round to send.

One-time preparation is a different product. You pay a fixed price for a read of the reports you supply and the documents that come out of it. Nobody files anything in your name. When you have the package, the purchase is over.

Where the mortgage changes the answer

A tradeline in dispute carries a remark on the tri-merge. Fannie Mae's automated underwriting reads disputed tradelines and can send the file to a manual underwriter (Selling Guide B3-5.3-09), who will ask for each dispute to be resolved or documented before closing. A furnisher that misses the thirty-day window loses the item for a while, and the furnisher that later certifies it gets it put back (§ 1681i(a)(5)(B)). Put back inside a rate lock, at the balance it always had, the account gets underwritten a second time.

None of that makes a dispute wrong. An account that is not yours, a paid collection reporting open or a stranger's address on page one should be disputed, with the facts that prove it, early. What hurts a mortgage is volume and timing: disputes against accurate items, filed in rounds, still open when the lender pulls.

If disputes are already running and you are about to apply, ask your loan officer before you do anything. A dispute against an item you cannot show is wrong is usually better withdrawn in writing before submission than left open in underwriting.

A rapid rescore is a separate tool, and only your lender can order one, through its credit vendor. It updates what a creditor already agrees to in writing, such as a paid balance. It does not settle a disagreement. Rescore or dispute: which one you need.

When a subscription is the better fit

If you have no purchase date, dozens of items you believe are wrong, and you want someone else to handle the mail and the follow-up for a year, a credit repair organization working under a written contract may suit you. Read the contract for the total cost, ask for the cancellation terms, and ask one question before you sign: will they stop every open dispute, in writing, the week before you apply for a loan. A company that cannot answer that is the wrong company for a buyer.

With a date on the calendar, the arithmetic changes. You want to know what is wrong across every file, what to leave alone, and which few letters are worth sending in the months you have.

How QualifyReady does the one-time version

You pull your reports free and upload them. The preview shows the counts before you pay. The read tags every negative item dispute, verify first or leave alone, with the reason and the exhibit named, and builds a 60-day plan backward from your dates. Letters are drafted only for the items you choose. You sign and send them. When the bureaus answer, Round Two reads the results.

One price, no subscription, nothing promised about a score, a deletion or an approval. Every line on every report is read and compared across the set, and the plan is yours to keep.

Questions buyers ask

Can a credit repair company keep disputing while my loan is in underwriting?

It can, which is the worry. Any dispute still open when the lender pulls shows on the tri-merge and can send the file to a manual underwriter. Ask the company to stop every open dispute in writing before you apply, and tell your loan officer what is still running. What ninety days of automated disputes looks like on a tri-merge.

Isn't a monthly plan cheaper if I only need it for two months?

Sometimes it is, if two months is how long it runs. Compare the total the contract says you will pay over the months your timeline actually allows against one fixed price. The Act requires that total to be in the contract, so ask for it before you sign. Then read the one-time prices beside it.

Does one-time mean I only get one round of letters?

It means you pay once for each step you choose. When the bureaus answer, Round Two compares the results with what you sent and drafts the next letters, and whatever you paid on a smaller step is credited toward a larger one for 60 days.
